Bently, Dorothy Jean (Laird)
Dorothy Bently, age 88, passed away on Thursday,  July 20, 2017 at the Auburn Memorial Hospital after a long illness.  She is survived by her husband of 70 years, Allen James Bently, her son Allen Jay Bently, both of Cayuga; her daughter Linda Jean Wright of Savannah; her grandson Gavin James (Kassandra) Wright of Suffolk, Virginia; great-grandchildren: Jason Allen, Gage Lee, Bret Andrew, Austin James, Samantha Ruth, Kendrick and Bella Rose Wright.  Mrs. Bently was predeceased by her parents Belle Kittner Laird and father Dell Laird, her grandson Jason K. Wright; sisters: Thelma Reed, Margaret Hogan and Florence Rose; brothers Lester and Robert Laird as well as several nieces and nephews.
A loving and dedicated wife, mother and grandmother, she worked side by side with her husband farming, planting, driving tractor and raising livestock. She canned everything off the farm and was the best venison meat cutter you could ever have.
In 1961, she started work at the Newark Developmental Center and 29 years later she retired as the Director of the Savannah Community residence. She was a strong willed advocate of the developmentally handicapped and was respected and highly praised throughout her career.
During her retirement, Mrs. Bently enjoyed living on the lake and especially enjoyed sunsets on the back porch with her husband.  She will be greatly missed by her Shitzu “Julie Ann” and her cat “Pena-Bena.”
Friends may call Wednesday July 26th  from 12 noon until 2pm at the Norton Funeral Home, 13081 West Church St., Savannah, NY where a celebration of her life will be held at 2pm.  Interment will follow at the Crusoe Cemetery in Savannah. In lieu of flowers, donations in Dorothy’s memory may be made to the Auburn SPCA. This would bring a smile to her face as she would always bring in a stray cat or injured bird.  She built cat shelters and fed the birds and ducks. She loved God’s creatures.
