Obituary of Evan James VanEenwyk

Please share a memory of Evan to include in a keepsake book for family and friends.

Age 95, died on October 7, 2020 at Strong Memorial Hospital. Evan was born in East Williamson, New York the youngest son of the late Henry and Mabel Buerman VanEenwyk. He was the second-generation owner of the East Williamson Mercantile along with his brother, Alfred who predeceased him along with his sisters Geraldine Stoner and Olive Jennings.  Evan served in the Navy during WW2 and volunteered in the East Williamson Fire Company during his younger years. Running “The Merc” was one of his great joys, he loved his interactions with customers, many of whom became life-long friends.  For a man known for his work ethic, he equally enjoyed his retirement.  Golfing in Florida and summering at his beloved cottage on Big Gull Lake in Canada.  Predeceased by his wife Mary in 1996, she was the love of his life.  He is survived by his daughters Dr. Fay (Steve) Migotsky, Gay Ann (Michael) Leary, and Gloria (Scott) Hanville and his sons James, Daniel (Anne) and Larry (Sharon) VanEenwyk.  Evan delighted in his “real” job, being Grandpa and he excelled at it.  Surviving him are Sarah, Josh, Eric, Melinda, Elijah, Christopher, Patrick, Jonathan, Brian, Joel, Zachary, Dustin, Heather, Grace, David, Rebecca, and Jennifer and his eight great-grandchildren.  For the last few years of his life, Evan came to work six days a week at Grandpa’s Nursery in Sodus, where he again enjoyed catching up with the many friends he had made over the years.  For once you had talked to Evan, you were considered a friend.  A long life lived, with many joys. The family is so grateful for his love and influence in their lives.

Private services to be determined.  In lieu of flowers, contributions can be made to Honor Flight Rochester or the Reformed Fellowship of Williamson, PO Box 913.
