William Carter Obituary

William “Bill” Carter

October 30, 1945 – January 17, 2026

Sodus Point;

William “Bill” Carter, 80, passed away on January 17, 2026, at the Sodus Rehab and Nursing Center, where he resided and received the best care.

Bill was born on October 30, 1945, in Rochester, the son of the late Leon and Marie (Sharp) Carter. He was raised primarily in Alton, NY, where he developed the strong work ethic and steady character that shaped his life.

On December 21, 1963, Bill married the love of his life, Joan A. Herrord. Together they made their home in Sodus Point and welcomed their daughter, Ruth, building a life centered on family, hard work, and community.

A welder by trade, Bill became the proud owner of The Prop Shop, a business he operated for nearly 60 years. Under his care, it grew into a true family endeavor and a trusted name in the community. Outside of work, Bill had a deep love for golden retrievers and spent many years showing them in obedience competitions, forming lifelong friendships along the way. He also enjoyed NASCAR and boxing, passions he followed with enthusiasm.

Bill is survived by his daughter, Ruth Carter; grandchildren Alyssa (Brandon) Flynn and Donald (Kate) Lennox; and great‑grandchildren Johnathan, Lucy, Jackson, and Sloane. He is also survived by his brothers Gary Carter and Joe (Yolanda) Carter, and his sister‑in‑law Ruth Fisher.

He was predeceased by his beloved wife, Joan; his son‑in‑law, Jeffrey Webster; and his sister, Cissy Carter (Cole).
