Obituary of Mary Evelyn Wilkins Sergeant (Gram)

Sodus: Age 103, passed away on July 20, 2015. She was predeceased by her husband L. Henry Sergeant; son Gilbert Henry Sergeant; two sisters Alberta and Mildred; and her brother Bob. She is survived by daughter-in-law Carol (Sodus); brother Delbert (Eleanor) Cleveland OH; three grandsons: Tim (Christine) Macedon, NY; Mark (Christine), Charlotte, NC; and Matthew (Tracy), Sodus, NY; six great-grandchildren: Jeffrey, Tyler, Michael, Katie, Madison, and Christopher. Evelyn was a nurse for more than 50 years primarily in Sodus NY, and was admired for her old-school work ethic. Her life-long devotion to her family, neighborhood, and community resulted in her being known to all simply as "Gram". She contributed to family chores (including yard work, laundry, and shoveling snow), and made it a point to walk at least a mile every day, well past her hundredth year. Her essence of unwavering kindness, charity, and empathy will be her legacy, as well as characteristics we will emulate. She will be tremendously and forever missed. At Evelyn’s request there will be no calling hours. A celebration of her life is planned for friends and family 2pm Thursday, August 13, 2015 at the First Presbyterian Church on West Main Street in Sodus. Contributions in her memory may be made to the Sodus Community Library.
