SODUS
Doris Louise Finnie, 88, entered eternal rest on August 1, 2016, after battling a brief illness. Her devotion to her family and her firm belief in God supported her in her struggle and ultimately gave her peace.
Doris was born to the late Fay and Matie Wideman; a Methodist minister and a homemaker respectively, in Greece, NY on September 20, 1927. She was immersed in the Christian community that would be her lifelong support from an early age. She learned how to play the organ and starting at age 16, she would serve God with her organ music at Methodist churches in Youngstown, Ohio; Buena, NJ; Walkertown, N.C.; and spent most of her years playing at the Alton United Methodist Church, Alton, NY; culminating in over 70 years as a church organist. She played the organ most recently for the Christmas Eve Service this past December. During her time at the Alton Church, she also served as President of the United Methodist Women’s Society and as a Sunday School Teacher.
Doris was devoted to her family and will be dearly missed. She is predeceased by her husband, Richard Finnie and her brother, Royce Wideman. She is survived by her three children; Rick Finnie of Illinois, Debra (Richard) Mathews of Sodus, and James Finnie of Sodus; three grandchildren; James Richard Finnie of New Jersey, Paige Finnie of New Jersey and Jason (Alexandra) Mathews of Rochester; and one great granddaughter, Lillian Mathews. She is also survived by her brother, Robert (Dottie) Hicks of Fairport, brother-in-law, Gerald (Alice) Finnie of Georgia and many nieces, nephews, and cousins.
Friends and family may call on Wednesday, August 3 from 2-4 and 7-9 at the Norton Funeral Home in Sodus, NY. Funeral service will be Thursday, August 4 at 11 am at the Alton United Methodist Church, Old Ridge Road, Alton, NY. Interment will follow at the Alton Cemetery. Donations in Doris’s memory may be made to the Alton United Methodist Church, care of Linda Furber, Glover Road, Sodus, NY 14551 or to the American Diabetes Association (diabetes.org).
