Please share a memory of Nelson to include in a keepsake book for family and friends.
Sodus: Age 82, passed away on Friday, January 10, 2020 surrounded by his loving family at the Laurel House Comfort Care Home in Newark. Nelson was predeceased by his loving wife, Marilyn (Galiotti); parents, Glenn and Margaret Hogan; sister, Barbara Hogan. He is survived by his children, Diane (Ron) Miller of Lyons, Patrick (Patricia) Hogan of NJ, Jim (Britta) Hogan of OH and Louis (April Noyes) Hogan of Clyde; grandchildren, Aleshia (Nate) Rooke, Amanda (Christopher) Reynolds, Kristin (Cody Kyler) Miller, Danielle Hogan, Michael Hogan, Mallorie Hogan, Bailey Hogan, Liam Hogan and Maia Hogan; great grandchildren, Madison Rooke, Lydia and Avery Reynolds, Larson, Arlo and Marin Kyler; and a loving extended family. We all have Nelson stories. There are the ones he told us, like growing up on the farm, that drive home from the Army, the hypnotist in the barracks, racing his Chevy (including that time he may have outrun the police), about him and Marilyn in the early years, Watkins Glen races, and the many, many stories about his family. And then there are the ones he gave us by being Nelson. Maybe he was your meat cutter for decades with his jokes and genuine interest in you, not to mention his Italian Sausage and breakfast sausage which were the best we ever had. Or maybe you played cards with him, or sat with him while he drank his cream ale, or maybe you got over-balanced with him on New Year’s Eve, or just sat with him in comfortable silence. Maybe he was your brother in law that you've known since you were a child, and a true part of your family. Or maybe he was your father, and you remember playing in his chair, going for soft serve ice cream, Duck Lake, the farm, teaching you, and him being there for all the big deals in your life because he wasn't about to miss seeing you on your day. Nelson was quick to smile and laugh. He gave as good as he got. Wherever he went, he turned strangers into friends. He valued tradition, but he had a great capacity for change in himself. He was stubborn. He worked hard. He gave everything for his family. His quiet way of being there with you and for you had a comfort of its own. More than anything, he adored his wife, and loved his kids. He had a way with his grandchildren and great grandchildren, always getting them to smile and laugh. And, you knew he loved you, not just because of what he said, but because of who he was and what he did to show it. His children look forward to hearing your stories.
