I dedicated my May newsletter article to Vonnie. I have copied it in the space below. Pastor Walter Stuber
Talks with Vonnie.
April was a very busy time this year at church because Holy Week and Easter were in the middle of the month. I got a bit behind on my visits to “sick and shut-in” folks, and so I was surprised to hear that after Easter Vonnie Hartley had gone into hospice care. Shortly after learning this, I went to her daughter’s house where I had one last visit with her. Vonnie had reached the stage where she was more asleep than awake, but her family told me that she was quite comfortable and not suffering. The next day she passed away peacefully, surrounded by her three daughters and other family members, while listening to hymn music in the background.
I usually do not discuss my pastoral visits, but I am sure that Vonnie would not mind me sharing a few things with you from our last conversation. It was one of those oddly warm days in March, and the sun was shining in a way that said winter was almost done. Her daughter’s house looks over an apple orchard, and we could see lots of new growth in the trees there. Vonnie had a small apartment adjoined to the house that allowed her to be more independent, as she had been in poor health for many years.
There was an aide who was with us that day, and the three of us had a rambling conversation about the “good old days”, family, the weather, etc. Vonnie showed me a picture of her great-granddaughter, who is a one year-old redhead, and she told me how she makes the cutest babbling sounds. She asked about my kids, and I showed her the latest pictures of Caleb and Elyse, which she appreciated.
We did not talk about the news, or celebrity gossip, as such things did not seem to be important at the time. However, there were many birds at a feeder outside her window, and we discussed them and the antics of the squirrels at length. This was a pretty typical visit for us, and nothing remarkable happened, or even seemed out of the ordinary. Sometimes it can be intimidating to talk with someone who is homebound, though in my experience casual talks like this can be quite meaningful. I do not claim to be an authority on that matter, but I find that a simple, regular visits are what people want near the end if they are feeling up for it.
I did pray with Vonnie and her family on the day before she passed away. It was uncertain if she could hear what I said, though perhaps she was aware of my words in her semi-conscious state. I gave thanks to God for the coming of spring, and all the wonderful things that happen during this time of transition. As the scriptures say, may you “walk in newness of life”, (Romans 6:4) in the new Easter season that the God has made. It is a prelude to what Vonnie is experiencing now that she is home with the Lord.
