The memory of Joe that I still think of (especially during the holiday season) is him in the back of St Rose church Christmas Eve singing “Oh Holy Night”.
His voice, along with the lyrics of the song, was such a beautiful way to start a Christmas Eve Mass. Mary and family, I am so sorry for your loss. I am sure he is heaven singing praise to our Lord.
Fondly,
JoAnne Bernhardt

I was privileged to grow up with Joe and Mary as neighbors and surrogate grandparents. They always included our family when we were kids. Joe was a gentle and kind man. I often think about the blessings of living next door and life lessons learned.

A time of sadness? Yes, but also a time to reflect on a life well lead. Dad was a simple man, in the best sense of the word. No pretensions, no hint of arrogance or even self-satisfaction. He was the same person with everyone. I started working on the loading dock at Mott’s when he worked in the office. I found that everyone knew him, whether they worked in a white shirt and tie, or on one of the lines. When he left Mott’s and became a fruit inspector for USDA, he enjoyed chatting with the growers; guess it reminded him of his farm boy roots. What you saw was what you got with Dad. When everyone at the VA, doctors, nurses, social workers, and janitor calls to express their condolences, that says a lot about the kind of guy he was even up to the end.
Are we sad? Sure. But then again, he knew us up to the end, even if his memory of parts of his life was gone. And his family was his pride and joy, and what he lived for. Whenever I’d see him, he’d tell everyone around “This is Son Joe (to distinguish me from all the other Joe’s in the family). He travels around the world taking pictures!” And I’d always bring pictures of birds or flowers from my travels. He loved the outdoors and we were fortunate to be able to wheel him around the gardens at the VA in the weeks before he passed.
A time of mourning or reflection? I was thinking the other day how much he is a part of us. He never said “Come with me and I’ll teach you to garden.” He just did it, we watched, and it became part of us to grow vegetables or flowers, and to spread the fig tree, which came from Italy with his parents, far and wide. He never said “Here is a piece of music and this is why you should appreciate it.” There was just music in the house all the time, whether from Broadway plays, Al Jolson, the Rat Pack, or Italian Musicale, which played most Sundays while he made his chicken soup for lunch. He and Mom set an example that lives on inside of each of us in many ways.
So, a little sad, but more celebrating his legacy to me, and thankful for what I received. His spirit lives on as a part of me, for when I need his strength and wisdom.
