Obituary of Martha R. Sandway

North Rose: Passed away peacefully on August 11 at the age of 75. Martha is predeceased by her parents Harry N. and Edna (Bonat) Rusack. She is survived by her husband of 54 years, Charles B. Sandway, Jr. and their children: Tarma (David) Cole; David (Laurie) Sandway; Kayla (Sigmund) Klos. Grandchildren: Brian, Steven, Michael, Alexander, Jacob and Eliza; sister and brothers: Mitzi (Richard) Kenyon; Richard (Donna) Rusack; Peter (Judith) Rusack, many nieces, nephews, and numerous friends. She was a loving, faithful and giving person. An avid walker, lover of nature (especially the Adirondack Mountains), and a friend to all. Martha was a graduate of Mooers High School and received her BS in Speech and Hearing Therapy and Elementary Education from SUNY at Geneseo. She previously worked at Brighton Central School District and the Sodus Headstart Program as a speech and hearing therapist. She also was a substitute teacher at the Sodus Central Schools. A huge supporter of Myer's Community Hospital Martha served in the The Twig Association for over 25 years -- at times as The Twig’s president and vice-president; served as Project Chairwoman and bazaar chairwomen for The Twig. She also volunteered for the hospital working at the information desk and patient courtesy. She, along with her husband, received the Myer's Spirit and Community Award in 1993. Martha was a HANYS (Hospital Association of NY) committee member and assisted with lobbying efforts in Albany, NY. An active member in Girl Scouts for more than 50 years, as a girl, a leader and consultant. Martha attended the 100th Anniversary of Girl Scouting celebration last year with her daughters and granddaughter -- all scouts. Martha was the past president of the Sodus Cooperative Nursery School; Past president of the Episcopal Women of St. John's, Sodus; Past president and long-term member of the "Monday Club" (a literary club); and Past member of the American Association of University Women. She loved to travel and play golf. She was an active member of her community center in Florida. In lieu of flowers, donations are welcome to be made in Martha's memory to Hospice of Wayne and Seneca Counties. Her memorial service will be held on Wednesday 2pm at St. John’s Episcopal Church in Sodus.
