Obituary of Elizabeth B. Hopkins (Burns)

Sodus: August 12, 2013, at age 84. Predeceased by her parents Edward and Frances Burns; husband of 59 years Melford C. Hopkins. She is survived by her four children; Edward Hopkins of Washington, DC; James (Jane) Hopkins of Sodus; John (Sandra) Hopkins of Sodus; and Elizabeth (Robert) Turner of Wilmington, NC; six grandchildren and four great grandchildren; two sisters Annette (Dale) Poe of Roanoke, VA; Barbara Kimpland of Hackettstown, NJ; one brother Edward (Windy) E. Burns Jr. of York, ME; sister-in-law Onolee Hubbard of Zephyrhills FL. Betty graduated Sodus Central School Class of 1947, and Penn Hall (junior college) in 1949. She continued her studies at the University of Miami where she met the love of her life, Melford C. “Curt” Hopkins of Canandaigua. They were married in Sodus on February 9, 1952. Besides being a great homemaker and mother, Betty was active in the Sodus community. She was one of the first dispatchers for the Sodus Town Ambulance, a member of the Myers Community Hospital Twig, long time member of Eastern Star. She was also a lifetime member and Director of the Altar Guild of St. John’s Episcopal Church in Sodus, and a 60 year member of The Grange. A Memorial Service will be held at St. John’s Episcopal Church in Sodus on Saturday, August 24, 2013 at 4:00 p.m. Interment will be at the Sodus Rural Cemetery. In lieu of flowers, contributions may be directed to St. John’s Episcopal Church, 54 West Main Street, Sodus, NY 14551, or to Lower Cape Fear Hospice, 1406 Physician’s Drive, Wilmington, NC 28401.
