Sodus: Passed away on Wednesday October 23rd, one day short of his 88th birthday. Arnie is survived by his children, Patricia (James) Bastedo and their children Benjamin and Sarah, Julie McGall, Peggy McGall, Michael (Susan) McGall and their children Josh and Nora, Arnold McGall Jr., Sheila McGall, and Doug (Cindy) Coomber and their children Eddie and Jacob; several nieces and nephews. Arnie was predeceased by his wife Betty on April 25, 2009, siblings Margaret Fuller, James McGall, Winifred Orbaker, Virginia DeVey and Jane Carol Brown. Arnie enlisted into the Naval Service in January 1944. Following his recruit training at Sampson; Arnie was assigned to the aircraft carrier USS Essex (CV-9). On November 25, 1944, for the first time in her far-ranging operations and destruction to the enemy, the Essex received damage. A kamikaze hit the port edge of her flight deck killing 15, and wounding 44. Arnie’s military citations include the Asiatic Pacific Area Campaign Medal, the Philippine Liberation Medal, and the World War II Victory Medal. There will be no prior visitation. A graveside service with Military Honors will be held at 11 a.m. on Saturday November 2nd at the Sodus Rural Cemetery. In lieu of flowers, donations may be directed to Disabled American Veterans, P.O. Box 14301 Cincinnati, OH 45250-0301.
