Obituary of Flora McGregor Murphy

Please share a memory of Flora to include in a keepsake book for family and friends.
Flora passed away peacefully on January 10, 2009, at age 91 after a short illness. For 30 years she was a partner, with her husband Edwin (deceased), in the Murphy Studio of Photography, Sodus, and active in photographic organizations at the Finger Lakes and state level. After retirement, Flora and Ed continued to reside in Sodus, while spending 5 months each year and making many friends in the Palmetto Mobile Home Park in Florida. Flora was a longtime member and past matron of Sodus Chapter, Order of the Eastern Star, and a past district deputy grand matron of Wayne District, Order of the Eastern Star, as well as a member of Zama Temple Daughters of the Nile, Rochester. A charter member of Sodus Women of Rotary, she was honored by Sodus Rotary Club and named a Paul Harris Fellow in 1996. She served on the Board of Directors of the Myers Community Hospital for 5 years and on its Community Relations Committee for many years. Flora was also a charter member of the auxiliary of Wallington Volunteer Fire Company and of the auxiliary to Sodus V.F.W. Post 07171. She was a 40+ year member of the American Legion Auxiliary, a member of Sodus Bay Historical Society, and a docent at the Sodus Point Light House. As a long-time member of the Wallington Cobblestone Schoolhouse Committee, she was proud of the small group’s efforts on building restoration, placement on the National Register of Historic Places, and especially of the program that enables school children to experience a day in a one-room country schoolhouse. Flora was a communicant of St. John’s Episcopal Church, Sodus, where she served on the Altar Guild and was a member of Women of St. John’s. She attended St. Mary’s Episcopal Church in Palmetto, Florida, and served on its Altar Guild. From 2007, Flora made her home at Rockynol Retirement Community near her beloved family in Akron, Ohio. She is survived by her son, Martin, daughter-in-law, Doni, and grandson, Brian, all of Akron, and many dear nieces and nephews. A memorial service will be held on Saturday, January 24, at 2 pm in Saint John’s Episcopal Church, Sodus. In lieu of flowers contributions may be made to Saint John’s, Sodus, or to a charity of your choice in Flora’s name. Ref: Norton Funeral Home.
