Obituary of Helen Everhart Combes

Sodus: Helen Everhart Combes passed away on November 24th, after a brief illness. She was born on May 18, 1923 in the Town of Huron, the daughter of Ida (Gansz) and Edgar F. Everhart. She is survived by her daughter, Barbara J.(Thomas) Ingrassia of Holden, MA and her son, Donald R. of Newark; two brothers, Edgar R. (Frances) Everhart of Lyons, and James H. (Beulah) Everhart of Garden Grove, CA.; and 8 nieces and nephews. She was pre-deceased by her son, Charles F. Combes in 1952 and her husband of 61 years, Richard L. Combes in 2006. She was a graduate of Lyons High School and earned a Bachelor’s of Education from Geneseo State Teachers College. She taught for one year in Ovid, and 3 years in Newark. She was the first teacher for the Sodus Cooperative Nursery School where she taught from 1960-1985. She often said that she had “over 500 grandchildren.” She led a weekly story hour at the Sodus Free Library for 17 years. She was a 63 year member of Sodus United Third Methodist Church where she was a Sunday School teacher, choir member, member of the United Methodist Women, and active on many committees. She was a long time member of the Sodus Eastern Star. Family and friends are invited to call on Friday, December 4, from 4:00 – 7:00 pm at NORTON FUNERAL HOME, 45 W. Main St. in Sodus. A Memorial Service and celebration of her life will be held on Saturday, December 5, at 2:00 pm at Sodus United Third Methodist Church, 58 W. Main St. Interment will immediately follow at Sodus Rural Cemetery. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the Sodus United Third Methodist Church Memorial Fund or the Sodus Cooperative Nursery School, P.O. Box 332, Sodus, NY 14551.
