I was so sorry to hear of George's passing. He truly was an interesting, remarkable man
who lived a long, full life. We always enjoyed his visits to our home. My mom & dad thought the world of him. And more recently, he visited the Sodus Point cottage where the Houghtalings & many other cousins were able to hear him share his stories & memories. The room would grow quiet, so interested were we all.. We missed him this year.
A verse by Jessica St. James says it well -
A life well-lived leaves its gentle pattern on the hearts of all.....
and the world is a lovelier place because one person touched it with warmth and
goodness and grace.
My condolences to the family. I know that you will miss him terribly.

Dear JoEllen, Chris and family,
Just read the news of your Dad's passing and know how difficult it must be to accept. When our family moved from Rochester to Sodus Point in 1960, George was the first Sodus Point man I met at age 11. He and your Mom were running the community center and were so encouraging to this tomboy who loved playing basketball and softball and just hanging out at the center, which they supervised with care and love for all of us Sodus Point kids. How lucky we all were to have George in our lives.
Even though I eventually moved away from the Point in my adult life, I still visited my parents frequently and was always so pleased to run into George around town or at the marina to get a hug and catch up with each other. Next to my own Dad, George was my other Sodus Point father in my heart. He made all of us Sodus Pointers proud with the work he did on behalf of our village and town. He will never be forgotten by all of us who knew and loved him.
With big hugs and my deepest condolences,
Gail Becker Nelli

Blessings to George Arney on his journey, and condolences to his family and all who loved him. I have so many words, and yet none are adequate to express my sadness at his passing and the joy that his life brought to everyone who was blessed to be in his presence. He changed my life. I am eternally grateful. Happy Trails, old friend. Condolences to JoEllen, Chris, Jae and the entire family. The lighthouse at Sodus Point won't shine as brightly.
George was not only our local treasure, but across the state and the country, as well. He served as the President of the New York State Association of Counties, and in a leadership position at the National Association of Counties. He launched my career in Albany, which led to finding the love of my life, adding two more children to my family, and having the most interesting life anyone could ask for. Thank you, George. I will miss you.

It is with great sadness that I read about George's passing. He was a great Supervisor and represented all the people of Wayne County with honor and dignity. My mom was very fond of George as she was a Secretary at Sodus High School when he was starring in sports. George always had a kind word and smile. He made you feel like his best friend when he spoke with you and he gave a great deal to the community. He attended ballgames of all types and was truly supportive.

George and Harriet were our coaches at the Sodus Point Community Center. They made certain we had a girls team as well as boys, and had us compete with other towns. We dug out the basement of the center and made it a rec center while they were our advisers. My five children and one grandson, Denzel, all got to enjoy the Community Center which continues to have a strong program today. We also formed a Teen Club with elected officials, and a constitution of our own design, so we learned government and organizational skills. We cleaned and painted, and scrubbed our half court for resurfacing. Our famous SU Coach Jim Boeheim from Lyons-Wayne County came to one of our games back when he was a SU Basketball recruit. While in his first election, I got to vote for George in the Primary. So glad George got to live long and happily at our beautiful Sodus Point. Happy is the word, George always greeted us as family with warmth, smiles, and true interest in our well-being. He even kept his calm when I goofed and made a basket for the other team. Rest in Peace Harriet and now George. Condolences to all the many friends & family, especially JoEllen & Chris and their families.
