I would like to thank Michele and the rest of the Steinrotter family for honoring my sister Pat in such a special way. My love and prayers are with you all. Words cannot express how shocked I was to hear the sad news.
In the past few days, old memories came flooding back. Happy memories of how it was back then growing up in rural Saskatchewan on a farm 1 mile from a small community called Mont Nebo. Everyone was loving, caring, and helped one another out. You may think it would be boring, not so much, especially for Pat.
In the day we would go skating on the frozen ponds and creeks on the farm. At dusk we would play hide and seek. After supper our Dad played the fiddle and Mom and oldest brother would chord on the guitars and of course all us girls would dance. Pat would get involved in all activities going on. She had a lot of friends and all the kids seemed to flock to our place to go tobogganing in a one horse toboggan, sliding down the big hill as we called it. It wasn't that big. We played jacks, hop scotch, cards, and carved our initials in trees.
Pat had a special friend Shirley and she became part of our big family. Pat and Shirley loved horse-back riding. Pat drove the team of horses and I remember her coming down the road, horses at full speed pulling a big hay rack, Pat standing up pulling back on the reigns yelling ho, ho, as she pulled into the farm yard, she calmly unharnessed the team. I stood and watched with great admiration.
Our small town had a curling rink, skating rink and community hall. Pat took part in everything going on. She curled, she played softball with our local team and competed with the surrounding communities. She joined the 4H club where she planted a garden. In the fall they would judge the produce displayed with a beautiful bouquet of her own gladiolas. I still remember her standing so proudly beside her table dressed in a beautiful polish cotton skirt with large pink flowers that our Mom had made complete with a crininal topped with a green nylon blouse and of course her black flats. All in style at that time; late 50's.
She also joined the square-dancing club and competed around the country. Of course, music was a big thing in our family, we had two fiddles, two guitars and an organ. I remember the kids from town coming down and forming bands. Of course, Pat was on the organ, the kind you had to pump on the two pedals. I danced around the room with the broom. What fun we had. Pat also sang as she would play the organ, my favorite was "Down in the little Green Valley" and my late sister Paulette would harmonize. Her favorite Uncle August came to visit and Mom asked her to sing and play. She sang and played "Old Shep" that brought tears to Uncles eyes.
Our land had a lake front, a small lake called "Island Lake" because of course a small island it was situated in the middle. Mom and one or two of us girls would go fishing. This one time Pat went with her and she caught a 20lb Norther Pike, unbelievable but true.
Pat also was a great runner, she got to compete for the provincials. Running like the wind in lead, her body decided to let a little wind blow. Embarrassed by what happened because she thought her competitor behind her heard, she lost her stride and unfortunately lost the race.
Dances would be held all over the small communities. Pat and her friends Shirley and a girl from the nearest city of Prince Albert would come and stay in the little orange cook house located on our farm. I would watch them get ready, back combing their hair, creating a large bee hive (as it was called) on top the head. Then off they would go in Shirley's very own car, a 1960 Rambler to the nearest dance hall.
Some Saturdays movies were held in the community hall. If we were given 25 cents we were happy as larks. Off to Mrs. Senums candy store where you could buy a box of cracker jack for 10 cents and 3 jaw breakers for a penny. Movies were 15 cents, Wow!
In 1966-67 Pat and Little Willie as I call him stayed with our parents as Fiffi went to instruct skiing in New York. In the evening Pat would knit sweaters with Mom. Large balls of the yarn would be on the floor. As they would be busy knitting Little Willie around the age of two would come along and kick the balls of yarn, unravelling as they spread across the floor. I guess he thought he was on a soccer field.
As a large family we all had chores to do, weed the garden, pick wild berries, saskatonns, etc. Mom and Dad were great role models, and taught us values. Now, as time passed, the little village of Mont Nebo, Saskatchewan remains almost deserted, one store and a dozen or so residents. Only the loving memories remain of my loving sister Pat will remain that I will treasure in my heart forever.
Will miss you so much Sis!
