Sodus: Born February 4, 1925, she passed away peacefully on March 5, 2014. Mernie was pre-deceased by her husband, William A. Rolston, grandson Andrew Neal and son-in-law Jeffrey Malcolm. She is survived by her children, Lucinda Rolston, Susanna (Michael) Mulberry, Debbie Neal, and David (Jody) Rolston, grandchildren, Bill and Matt Doyle, Bill, Kate and Sam Mulberry, Sara and Jake Neal, Laura and Abby Rolston, Kris Switzer. Also survived by 8 great-grandchildren, sister-in-law Susanna Knapp and several nieces and nephews. Mernie was born and raised in Sodus, her home for 89 years. She graduated from Syracuse University with a degree in Music Education. Music was a passion that continued throughout her life. She sang in her Church choir, Sodus Swing Choir, and spent countless hours playing the piano with her children and grandchildren singing along. Other interests include playing bridge with friends, gardening, reading, knitting, following Syracuse basketball , NY Yankee baseball and attending children’s and grandchildren’s sporting and music events. She also enjoyed baking, especially her famous gingerbread men. Mernie was an active member of the Sodus First United Presbyterian Church for over 60 years. She served as a Deacon and was a member of the Women’s Association and other church organizations. She was a member of Women of Rotary, and received the Paul Harris Fellowship award in 2010. She also served as a trustee for the Sodus Library, and was a member of Friends of the Library. Mernie was actively involved in the Myer’s Community Twig Association. In 1994 she received the Spirit Award, for her volunteer service to the hospital. She was also a longtime member of Monday Club. She will be greatly missed by all who knew her. Family and friends are invited to call from 3-7pm on Sunday, March 9th at Norton Funeral Home, 45 West Main Street in Sodus. A memorial service celebrating Mernie’s life will be held on Saturday, March 29 at 1:00pm at the First United Presbyterian Church in Sodus.
